Bid Lesson 1 - a

Assess Opening points

Level 1 bids are within the range 12-19 high card points.
With shapely hands occasionally you may open with 10 or 11 points where the shape adds value. ( see lesson 2)

Calculate your points

You have met this before. In order to estimate how many tricks you are likely to get we need to assign a value to a hand.
These are the high card points (HCP)

This can be done using the following scheme

Ace

= 4 points

King

= 3 points

Queen

= 2 points

Jack

= 1 point

There are 40 points in a pack, 10 in each suit

The more points a partnership has the more tricks are likely. Lots of points, lots of trick.
